后印象派画家高更曾说：“玛丽·卡萨特有魅力，但也有力量。”一百多年了，她仍然是美国乃至世界美术史上少有的几位出色的女画家之一。

玛丽·卡萨特（Mary Cassatt，1844～1926）是19世纪末至20世纪初期，极少数能在法国艺术界活跃的美国艺术家之一。她是一位不受世俗观念拘束、意志坚强、一心投入自己热爱的艺术事业的女性。卡萨特出身于美国费城上等人家，二十岁时宣称将来要做画家，从而与父亲发生冲突。在她的坚持下，父亲最终首肯，让她就读宾州美术学院。她由此走上绘画之路。
